Quick Tips For Making Vegan Mug Cakes
My first tip for making vegan mug cakes is to choose a mug that isn’t too small!
You want to ensure that your cake has room to grow and doesn’t explode in the microwave.
Any medium or large mug should work fine. Your chocolate mug cake may be at the bottom of the mug or only rise halfway if you use a large one and that is totally fine, it is better than it exploding in the microwave.
Ask me how I know! Because I have exploded one too many recipes when testing this!
Next, you will want to put all the dry ingredients first then all the wet ingredients. Some recipes call for a mixture of wet and dry from the beginning I don’t think this works so well personally!
When making this chocolate vegan mug cake recipe, you will want to stir up from the bottom to make sure you got all of the flour or else there will be clumps of it at the bottom once you are done cooking!
Making your own vegan mug cake is fairly simple, so don’t stress!
How To Make This Molten-Chocolate Vegan Mug Cake
Making this vegan mug cake couldn’t be easier!
It takes just 3 minutes of your time and is super fast and simple. The end result is an amazingly tasty molten chocolate cake in a mug!
First, you are going to want to choose a medium-large mug or else you are going to risk exploding it all over your microwave!
Then, you are going to want to combine the dry ingredients in the bottom of your mug.
For this chocolate mug cake, that would be flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cocoa powder.
Then, you will add your wet ingredients directly on top! Your wet ingredients are the oil and non-dairy milk.
Now, you are going to whisk until combined. Make sure to scoop the flour UP from the bottom of the mug so that it is all incorporated.
If you don’t do this, the vegan mug cake may have a bunch of flour clumped on the bottom once it is cooked!
Now, drop in 2 tablespoons of chocolate chips and mix until they are combined throughout. You don’t have to add this step, but I think the addition of chocolate chips helps that molten-chocolate flavor.
Now, finish it off by sprinkling some chocolate chips on the top of the vegan mug cake.
Again, you can skip this step if you want, but why the heck would you want to skip more chocolate chips in a chocolate mug cake? You wouldn’t! So throw them on!
Now, all microwaves are different. One may be really powerful and one may be super weak.
You will want to microwave this vegan chocolate mug cake for at least 1 minute.
Then, check the top. It will start to look “cooked” and firm and pull away from the edges of the mug.
If it still looks “wet” and like the batter, the vegan mug cake will need to be cooked more.
I like to cook the chocolate mug cake at 30 second intervals after we reach 1 minute mark.
If you reach the 2 minute mark and your mug cake still isn’t cooked, you will want to reduce it to 10 second intervals.
If you overcook the vegan mug cake recipe, the cake will be gummy and a weird texture so you don’t want to overcook.
If you want that molten-chocolate texture with a ooey gooey center, you will want to cook the cake until the top is just barely cooked so that the center is soft and goeey!
Let your mug cake cool a little bit and then dig in.
When you take it out of the microwave, it will be incredibly hot so you want to make sure to wait just a little bit before eating or else you will burn your mouth!
Then, you can enjoy with your favorite toppings!

3-Minute Molten Chocolate Vegan Mug Cake
This molten chocolate vegan mug cake has a nice crust and an ooey gooey chocolate center! It combines the best flavors of a chocolate cake and it is baked to perfection. This vegan chocolate mug cake comes together in under 3 minutes and you can customize it to your own tastes. I love a dollop of vegan whipped cream or ice cream!
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup + 1/8 cup flour
- 1/4 cup + 1/8 cup non-dairy milk
- 2 TBS oil
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 TBS sugar
- 3 tablespoons chocolate chips
Instructions
In the bottom of your mug, combine the dry ingredients which are the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cocoa powder. Whisk to combine.
Then add your wet ingredients on top. Your wet ingredients are your vanilla, oil, and non-dairy milk.
Mix very well to combine into a batter. You want to make sure to scoop up all of the flour that is on the bottom of the cup or else you will be left with uncooked flour after you microwave this cake.
Now, add in 2 tablespoons of chocolate chips to the mug cake batter and stir until they are combined throughout.
Add remaining 1 tablespoon chocolate chips to the top of the vegan mug cake and add more or less to taste. I also like adding white chocolate chips here!
Microwave for 1 minute and then check to see if the top is cooked. Then microwave for 30-60 seconds more or until cooked and the top is spongey like a real cake. PLEASE NOTE: all microwaves are different. You will have to cook this vegan chocolate mug cake for at least a minute, but you may have to cook it longer if your microwave is on the weaker side. Don't be afraid to keep cooking, but just do it in 30 second increments. Once you reach 2 minutes, cook at 10 second intervals if necessary!
For a molten chocolate center, you will undercook it slightly. Just make sure that the top of the cake is cooked and has a crust that looks done. If it still looks wet like the batter, it isn't done yet.
Let cool a little bit and then enjoy with your favorite toppings!
